I’m switching to a low-mow lawn. I’m making my flower beds much bigger slowly, but surely, and planting all perannual NATIVE plants. Iam composting the dug up grass & sod; and we got an old fashioned Reel mower to mow with (no emmisions!) and a rainbarrel.

I have been replacing old appliances lately with more energy efficient models. In six months, hundreds of dollars were saved, though I also left them off more often.

I have also replaced my light bulbs with CFL bulbs and have a need to replace the water heater shortly, which will save even more with the power company. Luckily, the local utility company offers rebates on new energy efficient models, also.

I ride my Segway Personal Transporter for errands and short trips - a full 24 mile charge costs less than 10 cents and produces zero emissions because it doesn’t use fossil fuels. Plus it spreads smiles.

Weatherstrip and insulate. The typical American house ‘leaks’ the equivalent amount of air to a 3m^2 hole. it’s like leaving the door open not to caulk the windows!

I walk around or take public transportation as much as possible in NYC. I carry my own bag when shopping and don’t use plastic bags.

I reduce my environmental impact by composting all my biodegradable trash and reusing all the plastics that are not number 1 or 2 (yogurt containers!). They make great to-go containers, plant pots, bulk item scoops and containers, and cut up and assembled, they make great pieces of small furniture and functional household items.

I changed my shower head! Switching to a low-flow shower head can save 750 gallons of water per month in your household. It takes a large amount of energy to produce one gallon of potable water, and water is becoming an increasingly scare resource. Reducing your water footprint is a huge step towards “greening” your lifestyle.

I switched to an all-green energy provider. It’s 100% produced by renewable energy sources, mostly wind.

Also, I walk or use public transportation to get around NYC.

replace your incandescent light bulbs with CFL bulbs- they use 80% less energy and last much longer! and dont forget to recycle the old light bulbs! they contain mercury, which needs to be disposed of properly to prevent damaging the environment!
